Difference Between Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation | When we think about motivation, the first thing that strikes our mind is its source: internal or external. Intrinsic motivation can be described as behavior that is directed by internal rewards. As against, extrinsic motivation refers to motivation which is based on one’s external needs like money, position, values, etc.

What is Motivation?

Motivation can be understood as an invisible force that moves, activates or drives people and causes them to act. It is something that instigates a person to act and makes him continue the action with enthusiasm, to achieve the desired goal.

When we observe someone working towards a certain goal or result, we perceive it as motivation. There are two important types of motivation – Intrinsic Motivation and Extrinsic Motivation.

Intrinsic motivation is behavior in which a person gets motivated from an internal desire (from himself) to do or achieve something, for his own sake. It originates from a feeling of accomplishment, satisfaction, rather than the achievement of outside incentives, pressure, deadlines, etc.

Simply put, the motivation to adopt a certain behavior comes from within, because it is naturally satisfying. It arises from fun, challenge, interest, etc. The source of motivation is attached to the task and the person is automatically engaged in the task.

Moreover, it is associated with a state of self-actualization, where the satisfaction of getting something of value motivates the person again, so that motivation is made automatic and has nothing to do with financial rewards.

Intrinsic motivation results in high quality work, timely completion of tasks, facing challenges and gaining excellence in tasks.

Extrinsic motivation refers to the type of motivation in which the motivation is caused by an external force that pushes you to do or achieve something with the aim of getting a reward or avoiding negative consequences.

This is a form of operant conditioning. Operant conditioning uses rewards or punishments to increase the likelihood of certain behaviors. It could be gain, fame, grades, recognition, rewards or threats of punishment etc.

This type of motivation is based on the fact that if human behavior is positively rewarded for the work done, it tends to be repeated. However, the rewards of such behavior must be strong and long-lasting, increasing the likelihood of their occurrence.

By far, monetary rewards are considered the best incentive for desired behavior. However, it has been debated that whether money really motivates people or just pushes them to work. This can include higher salaries, added benefits such as retirement plans, benefit-sharing schemes, paid vacations, health insurance, food stamps, etc.

Difference Between Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation

  1. In intrinsic motivation, a person acts to achieve something, but not for external rewards, but to enjoy the process or regard it as an opportunity, to explore new things/ideas and also to actualize abilities. In contrast, in extrinsic motivation, the person adopts a certain behavior in an attempt to gain a reward or avoid punishment.
  2. In intrinsic motivation, it is an action that is considered important, over which the person has control. Hence, it makes people participate in an activity for their own volition or interest and not for the reward it will provide. In contrast, in extrinsic motivation, the focus is on the results obtained when the task is completed. This means that it makes people do something to get a tangible or intangible reward.
  3. In intrinsic motivation, the locus of control lies within the person, who decides to perform the task. In contrast, in extrinsic motivation, the locus of control is external to the person who is said to be performing the task.
  4. Intrinsic motivation aims to nurture, develop and satisfy oneself and also identify potential, and explore abilities. On the other hand, the purpose of extrinsic motivation is to get a reward or to avoid certain negative outcomes.
  5. Intrinsic Motivation is able to satisfy a person’s basic psychological needs for independence, competence, etc. On the other hand, extrinsic motivation does not satisfy one’s basic psychological needs, nevertheless, it embraces external benefits like money, power, fame, etc.
  6. Intrinsic Motivation relates to how the task / activity being pursued is in line with the values ​​of the person. On the other hand, extrinsic motivation relates to how the activity will affect a person’s presence.
  7. In intrinsic motivation, the person enjoys the task, but in extrinsic motivation, the person places more emphasis on the rewards received for completing the task.
  8. Intrinsic motivation is driven by a person’s wants and needs. In contrast, extrinsic motivation is driven by other sources, usually other people.

In extrinsic motivation, there is a tangible or intangible outcome that acts as a reward that a person wants to achieve, but in intrinsic motivation, the reward is the behavior itself.
