This year, as we all know, has been one of the most disastrous years in the history of our world. Despite the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, many natural and man-made disasters make things worse. Hence, traveling to exotic countries for a vacation is now impossible.
However, thanks to technology, we have seen many companies lend their tools and services to help people move around the world from their living room couches. However, unlike a 2D virtual tour, “Wander” is an Oculus app that lets you explore many locations and places in the world using Google Street View images.
Oculus Quest Facebook is a virtual reality (VR) tool for playing realistic games and exploring places and locations in a 360-degree view. So, Wander leverages this technology to transport users to any location in the Google Street View database.
Google Street View, in case you didn’t know, is a tool that displays a 360-degree image of the actual location on your smartphone. You can tap the screen to go further down the street and explore all the shops, theaters and other iconic buildings in the area.
So what Wander did was it took all the images that Google’s image capture vehicles had taken over the years, and turned them into 360-degree VR locations. Therefore, users can put on their Oculus Quest headset, and with just the click of a button on the Oculus controller, they will be transported to a random monastery, park, theater, or gas station somewhere in the world. However, if you want to visit a specific location, you can also search for it using the on-screen search bar.
Also, this app lets users travel back in time as you can explore locations through various timelines by selecting previous years provided Street View data.
Once users reach a location, they will be able to explore it in a 360-degree view. Meaning, you can move your head to look around the area and down the road using the controller.
Also, with the latest update, the app now works in multi-user mode. This means that you can now connect with your friends and go on adventures together…so much fun isn’t it?
So, if you have an Oculus Quest VR set lying around in your house, you can check out the app on the Oculus digital store. The original price of this app is $9.99. However, at the time of writing this article, the Oculus digital store listed a 20% discount off the original price, which makes the app $7.99.
